He Said "Wrestling Has Consumed You."

He Said "Wrestling Has Consumed You."

At Champion’s Path, we believe wrestling is more than a competition. It’s a way of life. Recently, someone told me I’ve let wrestling “consume” me — that I’ve trained my boys so intensely it’s become all I am, and they suffer for it.

Let me set the record straight.

I don’t train my boys because I want medals, attention, or to live through them. That’s shallow. I train them because wrestling is a tremendous tool to prepare them for manhood. As a their father giving them the skills and character to have the most fulfilling life they can is the goal.

Why We Train

Through long grueling training sessions and fiercely fought competitions wrestling develops discipline, mindset, courage, humility, and perseverance. It’s the same stuff manhood is built on.

Psychologist Jordan Peterson puts it well:
“Pick one thing and work hard to be the best you can be at it. And see what happens.”

That line matters. Because if you pursue excellence in one area, you develop the tools to excel in every area.

  • You can’t become great in wrestling without discipline.
  • You can’t become great without learning to sacrifice today for tomorrow.
  • You can’t become great without being humbled and standing back up.

And those lessons? They’re the exact same tools that make a man a faithful husband, a strong father, and a reliable leader.

Jesus Commands Excellence

Jesus doesn’t call us to coast. He calls us to work, fight, and strive with everything we have.

  • “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” (Colossians 3:23)
  • “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.” (1 Corinthians 9:24)
  • “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8)

Physical training is valuable because it develops the body and the spirit. Wrestling is spiritual training disguised as a sport.

Wrestling Builds More Than Athletes

Think about what the mat teaches:

  • Perseverance“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.” (James 1:4)
  • Self-control“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” (Proverbs 25:28)
  • Courage“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, for the Lord your God is with you.” (Joshua 1:9)
  • Sacrifice“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

These are not just wrestling virtues — they’re life virtues. Wrestling sharpens them in ways few other things can.

Why I Train My Boys

So when people accuse me of letting wrestling “consume” me, they miss the point.

I train my boys because I love them. Because I don’t want them soft, entitled, or weak. I want them strong, courageous, humble, and wise. Wrestling is the forge. Manhood is the product.

As Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits.” (Matthew 7:16)

If wrestling produces discipline, perseverance, strength, and faith, then the fruit speaks for itself.

The Champion’s Path

Wrestling isn’t a distraction from life. Wrestling is life practice. It’s where boys learn to carry weight, fight hard, and endure pain so they can become the men God made them to be.

At Champion’s Path, that’s our mission — not just to build wrestlers, but to build men.

Because the path to becoming a champion on the mat and a champion in life… is the same path.
